Stewardship

Stewardship is a way of living in response to God’s generosity toward us. It means not only giving thanks for everything God has entrusted to our care, but also sharing it so that we may join boldly with the Spirit’s work in the world. We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our very lives to God as an offering to God’s glory.

Our theology of stewardship at Massanutten Presbyterian Church is rooted in five convictions that invite our joyful response to the generosity of God:

  1. Everything belongs to God.
  2. God has made us stewards of what belongs to God. To be a steward is to watch over (care for) something that belongs to another.
  3. We give not to the church, but as the church.
  4. Giving is an act of worship (no matter how or where we give).
  5. Stewardship and discipleship are inseparably linked.

Our stewardship begins with the recognition that everything in our lives comes from and belongs to God. The psalmist proclaims that “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). The more we come to see that God entrusts these things to us for the purpose of serving and glorifying God, the more we are able to offer them joyfully back to God. In that way, stewardship at Massanutten Presbyterian Church is really about discipleship – about following Jesus as Lord in every part of our daily living. It has to do with caring for and sharing everything which God has entrusted to us – our time, our talent, our treasure – all of it, freely and joyfully shared to the glory of God.
