Joining Massanutten

Becoming A Member of Massanutten Presbyterian Church

Each Sunday following worship, one of the pastors is available in the sanctuary to greet those interested in exploring discipleship with Massanutten. An Inquirers’ session is offered periodically. For more information about these opportunities or church membership, please contact the church office or call 540-434-6194.

Methods for Joining the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

“The incarnation of God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives to the church not only its mission but also its understanding of membership. One becomes a member of the church through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all life. Baptism and a public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are the visible signs of entrance into the active membership of the church” (PCUSA Book of Order, G-5.0100a). Indviduals may become a member of Massanutten Presbyterian Church by one of the following methods:

Profession of faith: A person who has never been a member of any Christian church, or who has benn baptized but never officially “joined” a church, makes a profession of faith in Jesus Christ.

Certificate of Transfer: A person who is a member of some other Christian Church and wishes to unite with Massantten may request that the secretary write for her or his letter. If you completed a form expressing interest in membership at Massanutten the secretary has already written for your church certificate.

Reaffirmation of Faith: Some churches do not transfer members, including but not limited to the Church of Christ, the Baptist Church, and the Roman Catholic Church. A person who is a member of one fo these churches and wishes to join Massanutten will be asked to reaffirm his or her faith in Jesus Christ. No “rebaptism” is required.

Affiliate Membership: A person who is a member of another Presbyterian Church but who will only temporarily be in the Harrisonburg area may use this category. An affiliate member is officially connected to Massanutten for a period of two years while maintaining membership in her or his present church. The affiliate relationship may be renewed.
